In the fall of 1899 Mr. Dauphin D. Dougherty & Blanford B. Dougherty, acting when co-principals, began a school which was known as Watauga Academy. These co-principals operated for quaternary years until the school was manufactured a state institution.

Inside 1903, fallowing interest in the school got spread to the contiguous counties, Hon. W.C. Newl& of Caldwell County introduced the bill in the Northerly Carolinthe Home of the General Assembly to produce this a state school, by owning an appropriation for maintenance and for building. A measure was adopted & passed to the Senate. Captain E.F. Lovill of Watauga, R.B. White of Franklin County, Clyde Hoey of Cleveland County, E. J. Justice of McDowell County spoke pro the measure. In March 9th, 1903, a bill became law, & a Appalachian Expert training School for Teachers was established.

A fresh trustees met inside June 1903 & elected Mr. B.B. Dougherty, Superintendent & D.D. Dougherty, Principal. For twenty-both years there was the period of steadily incubation, academic development, & worthful service to the State. Around 1925, a Law-makers changed a title to the Appalachian State Normal School & confiscate extra funding for maintenance & lasting improvement. Superintendent B.B. Within 1930, the number one 4 month class was graduated. That season 158 young men & young women were graduated within June & some Fourscore other graduated at a August Commencement. ()

Inside 1948 a Graduate School was formed. Enrollment was as much as 1,100 students, including Twenty-three postgraduate, sustaining 65 faculty. President B.B Dougherty retired when 56 years of serving a school around 1955. Dr. J.D. Rankin became interim president until Dr. William H. Plemmons was installed.
